Would you dare to disclose to your friend that you have HIV/AIDS? Would you have the courage to tell about it to your colleague or an employer? Are we ready to listen and help? "People with HIV/AIDS are still discriminated though the fear, related to this illness, exist in both the people with or without HIV/AIDS."- according to people from the association "Pozityvus gyvenimas".
Tomorrow, 7th November, Thursday, district of Klaipėda, in the public library of I. Simonaitytė , hall of Gerlach, a place will be taken by a conference/discussion "HIV/AIDS prevention: roles of the state and self-government" , initiated by the association "Pozityvus gyvenimas". Together with Klaipėda city municipality, Public Health Department of Klaipėda, Klaipėda Mental Health Center we organized an event which goals were to address the isolation of patients, create and develop HIV/AIDS prevention strategies for the state and other municipalities.
According to the organizers, a theme for the conference was encouraged by the inadequate state and other municipalities strategy in the fight with AIDS. The state determines only a basic prevention strategy in the fight with HIV/AIDS while municipalities plan and take local actions which often do not coincide. This produces more obstacles between the goals and practical possibilities to accomplish these goals.
" During the past several years, when there was no sufficient prevention against HIV, there was no promotion for HIV testing, situation of HIV infection statistics got worse. That is why, further apathy can not be tolerated." - according to a leader of the association "Pozityvus gyvenimas",- Jurgis Andriuška.
The mayor of Klaipėda city, Vytautas Grubliauskas, will welcome all participants of the conference. Presentations will be given by specialists who have a lot of experience in HIV/AIDS prevention:
• Ona Sokolova, Head of Klaipėda Public Health Center, Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Center,
• Janina Asadauskienė, Head of Health Division in Klaipėda city municipality administration,
• Aleksandras Slatvickis, Head physician of Klaipėda Mental Health Center,
• Rasa Girdžiūnienė, Head of Department of Infectious Diseases in Klaipėda University Hospital,
• Jurgis Andriuška, chairman of the association "Pozityvus gyvenimas".
During the conference, we will try to approve a resolution which was sent out to EU institutions. By this resolution we will try to attract attention to health issues which are being solved poorly, these include: control of HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis C as well as fight against intravenous drug use.
The conference will begin with a cycle of events intended to attract society's attention to problems which people with HIV deal with. 22th-29th November, "European HIV testing week", organized by "Pozityvus gyvenimas" and partners, will take place in Klaipėda and Kaunas. During this week, with the help of Klaipėda Healthcare Center, citizens and especially youth will be encouraged to get tested. 1st December is the day when many events will take place in all over Europe to commemorate World AIDS Day.
